The building is inspired in sketches made by Bernini when he had to build the Louvre in Paris. The decoration of each room as well as their distribution have changed over the years.
Among the more than 3.000 rooms in the Royal Palace of Madrid the ones that stand out are: The Principal Staircase, The Throne Room, The Hall of Halberdiers, the Salita Gasparini, the Royal Pharmacy, etc.
The Royal Armouries Royal Palace is considered one of the most important collections of its kind. It keeps arms and armor belonging to the Spanish royal family since the thirteenth century. Meanwhile the picture gallery shows some of the most important treasures of our national heritage, including The Virgin and Child of Luis Morales and Isabel La Católica portrait of Juan de Flanders. Velázquez, Goya, Federico Madrazo and Sorolla are other painters represented.
The Royal Palace welcomes every Wednesday (except July, August and September and those days when you held any official act or weather conditions prevent) the colorful change of the Royal Guard. The appointment is at 11:00 am at the Puerta del Principe (Bailen street Access).
